Broadband for retail and shops

In a shop, the broadband is part of the till. When it drops, card payments, stock checks and online orders can stop with it. This guide covers what a retailer needs from BT Business Broadband and how to keep trading when the line has a bad day.

In short

Broadband for retail needs to keep payments flowing. With BT Business Broadband, look at Hybrid Backup to switch to 4G automatically if the line fails, Prompt Care for BT's next-working-day fix target including Saturdays, Guest Wi-Fi to keep shoppers off your till network, and a check that card machines and EPOS work without a traditional phone line.

What a shop needs from its broadband

Retail has changed what a broadband line is for. A modern shop may run almost all of these over one connection:

  • Card payments, through internet-connected card machines or payment apps on tablets and phones.
  • Cloud EPOS, where the till, stock levels and sales reports live online rather than on a back-office PC.
  • Online orders and click and collect, which need the shop to see orders as they arrive.
  • Shopper Wi-Fi, so customers can check prices, pay with apps or use loyalty schemes in store.
  • Business phones that now run over the internet as well.
  • Cameras and alarms, some of which report over the connection or need to be viewed from outside.

That makes two things more important than headline speed: staying online, and keeping the till network separate from everything else. Many shops will not need the top Full Fibre tier; what they need is a connection that keeps them trading when something goes wrong.

Card machines and EPOS: check them before the switch-off

The UK's traditional phone network (the PSTN) closes on 31 January 2027, and BT no longer sells traditional phone lines. Retail is one of the sectors most affected, because payment kit was often built to dial out over a phone line.

BT's own guidance is clear on the points that matter to shops:

  • Card machines. Many run over the internet or a mobile network and do not rely on a phone line, but some still need a traditional line.
  • EPOS. BT says you can only use an EPOS system with its digital line if it runs over the internet and does not depend on a phone number.
  • London Oyster card machines. BT says these are not compatible with a digital phone line.
  • Other kit to check. BT lists fax, franking, gate entry, loud-environment bells used in warehouses, and older alarm, card payment, care and lift systems.

Before your line changes, make a list of every device plugged into a phone socket and ask each supplier whether it works over broadband or needs replacing. A card machine that connects over Wi-Fi or a network cable uses your broadband like any other device; one that dials out over a phone line needs a new route, so ask your payment provider. Our page on the PSTN switch-off and your broadband explains the change, and our sister site covers card terminals and the switch-off and alarms and special lines in more detail.

One more point: digital phone lines do not work in a power cut. If the shop phone is your only way to call for help, keep a charged mobile to hand.

Keeping the tills taking payments when the line fails

A fault on a busy trading day is the scenario every retailer worries about. Two BT features address it, and they do different jobs.

Hybrid Backup keeps you online while the fault is fixed. A Hybrid Connect device sits alongside your BT hub and switches the broadband connection to 4G automatically if the fixed line fails. Because it is the hub's connection that moves to 4G, devices that reach the internet through the hub, such as a cloud EPOS or an internet-connected card machine, can carry on at mobile speeds. BT says your static IP and IP voice services keep working too. Hybrid Backup is included with Enhanced and Pro and is an add-on for Essential. Mobile speeds vary by location, coverage and demand, so treat it as cover for an outage rather than a second full-speed line.

Prompt Care affects how quickly BT aims to fix the line. BT's Standard Care, on Essential and Enhanced, targets a fix by the end of the second working day after a fault is reported before 9pm on a working day. BT's Prompt Care, included with Pro and Ultra and an add-on for the other plans, targets the end of the next working day for faults reported before 9pm Monday to Saturday, and counts Saturdays as working days. For shops that trade on Saturdays, that difference can matter.

If BT misses its target fix time, BT's Customer Service Compensation Scheme pays rental credit under the scheme's terms. Some card machines also carry their own mobile SIM as a fallback; ask your payment provider whether yours does.

Guest Wi-Fi for shoppers

Giving shoppers your main Wi-Fi password puts their phones on the same network as your tills and back-office PC. BT Guest Wi-Fi avoids that, and it is included on every BT Business Broadband plan.

  • Separate from your business network. BT runs it as a public network, kept apart from your private one.
  • Password-free. Shoppers join in one step, so staff are not handing out a password at the counter.
  • Business traffic comes first. BT keeps 80% of the available speed for your business, however many guests are online.
  • Filtered as standard. BT's content controls block inappropriate material on Guest Wi-Fi.
  • Up to 13 users at a time. Idle guests are disconnected after 10 to 15 minutes so others can join.

You switch it on in My Account or the BT Business app. Thirteen users at a time may be plenty for a small shop; if you expect more shoppers online at once, tell us when you enquire so we can talk through the options, including the separate guest network on BT Ultra Broadband.

Wi-Fi on the shop floor and in the stockroom

A single hub behind the counter rarely reaches the far end of a long shop, a basement stockroom or a first-floor office. Plan the coverage before installation day.

  • Smart Hub 3 and Complete Wi-Fi Plus. On Full Fibre, and on Standard Fibre with Pro, BT supplies its Wi-Fi 6 Smart Hub 3. Complete Wi-Fi Plus adds discs that work with it to make one network across the premises. It is included with Pro, and BT says it is only compatible with Smart Hub 3, so on Essential and Enhanced it is an add-on where you have that hub.
  • BT's coverage guarantee has limits. It covers the main building for the first six months. Outbuildings and extra sites are not covered, so a detached stockroom or yard needs separate thought.
  • Placement. BT advises putting discs about halfway between the hub and the weak area, in the open, away from large metal objects and not in cupboards. In a shop that often means keeping them clear of metal shelving and display units.
  • Ultra for a managed network. BT Ultra Broadband replaces the hub with a Cisco Meraki security appliance and up to three Meraki Wi-Fi 6 access points. BT says each access point covers roughly a 10 to 15 metre radius, and its engineer carries a standard step ladder, so high ceilings in warehouse-style units need checking first.

If you choose Ultra, note that BT's Expert Setup engineer helps migrate up to 10 computers, 2 printers or copiers and BT-provided IP phones to the new network, but BT says migrating retail till systems, CCTV, door access and network storage is the customer's job. Your EPOS supplier or IT support will need to move those. Our business Wi-Fi guide covers coverage planning in more depth.

Security for payments and customer data

Shops handle card payments and customer details, and every BT Business Broadband plan includes some protection at network level. It helps, but it does not replace the requirements your payment provider sets for card security.

For a shop, Wi-Fi Security Controls are useful because you can approve the tills and staff tablets and stop unknown devices joining the business network. Our business broadband security guide explains how the layers fit together.

How we help retailers

We check what your shop's address can get, go through your card machines, EPOS and other phone-line kit with you before the switch-off, recommend a plan and add-ons, quote, place the order and help you through to installation day.

If you need shop phones as well, our sister site covers BT Cloud Voice for retail and hospitality. Pricing depends on the line, plan, add-ons and contract length, and is confirmed at quote. Contact us and tell us how your shop takes payments today.

Frequently asked questions

What broadband does a small shop need?

Resilience matters as much as speed. Look for a Standard Fibre or Full Fibre line with Hybrid Backup if payments run over the broadband, BT Guest Wi-Fi for shoppers, and a fault-fix level that matches your trading days. We check what your address can get and recommend a plan.

Will my card machine work without a phone line?

Many card machines run over the internet or a mobile network, but BT says some still need a traditional phone line. Ask your payment provider before your line changes, because the traditional network closes on 31 January 2027.

Can I still take card payments if my broadband goes down?

With BT's Hybrid Backup, the connection switches to 4G automatically, so devices that use the broadband through your BT hub can carry on at mobile speeds. Some card machines also have their own SIM; check with your provider.

Should I give customers my shop Wi-Fi password?

It is better not to. BT Guest Wi-Fi, included on every plan, gives shoppers password-free access on a network kept separate from your tills, with up to 13 users at a time and content filtering as standard.

Does BT fix broadband faults on a Saturday?

With BT's Prompt Care, faults reported before 9pm Monday to Saturday are targeted for a fix by the end of the next working day, and Saturdays count as working days. Prompt Care is included with Pro and Ultra.
